About Heritage Stone

Each property uses traditional Paxiot construction — hand-cut local limestone, lime mortar, timber-framed roofs, and stone-arched doorways. Many date from the Venetian period (16th-18th century) when Paxos was under Venetian rule. The construction techniques are still practised by a small number of master masons on the island today.

A balance. Original architectural features — stone walls, timber ceilings, traditional fireplaces, terracotta floors — are preserved and restored. Modern systems (plumbing, electricity, climate control, kitchens, bathrooms) are integrated discreetly so the property functions as a contemporary stay without erasing its history.

Yes, noticeably. Thick limestone walls (typically 60-80cm) provide natural thermal mass — the buildings stay cool through August heat without heavy reliance on air conditioning. This is one reason the construction technique has persisted for centuries.

Fully modern in function. Every Heritage Stone property has high-speed Wi-Fi, fully equipped kitchens, contemporary bathrooms, and air conditioning. The character is in the architecture and finishes, not in deprivation.

Often, yes. Traditional Paxiot homes were built around defensive courtyards with smaller individual rooms rather than open-plan layouts. Bedrooms tend to feel intimate and characterful. Each listing shows precise dimensions if room size is a priority.

Yes. Where documented, each Heritage Stone listing includes notes on the property's age, original use (family home, agricultural building, sea captain's residence), and significant restoration milestones. Our local team can answer specific historical questions on request.
